Slane crosses vandalised

Heartless vandals have desecrated the white crosses in Slane village, which commemorate those who have lost their lives on the roads in the village.

The Bypass Slane Campaign group are distressed and appalled by the vandalism which took place yesterday.

Eleven of the commemorative crosses were smashed beyond repair and a further two crosses turned upside down.

'This was a blatant act of disrespect for those who have tragically lost their lives in our village and is difficult to comprehend,' said spokesperson, Michelle Power.

The crosses on Mill Hill serve as a reminder of those who have died on the roads in Slane - 23 to date - and also as a reminder to motorists to slow down on this treacherous stretch of road.

The crosses had recently been refurbished over several months and all 23 had been repaired, re-painted and re-mounted.

The Bypass group are a voluntary organisation and are appealing for assistance to replace the crosses from anyone who feels they are in a position to do so.

Help would be appreciated from anyone who could manufacture replacement crosses, donate materials or donate funds to enable them to replace the crosses as soon as possible.
