Brendan Farrelly, Lismullen and Navan
There was widespread sadness following the death of Brendan Farrelly, Mellows Terrace, Navan, on 9th January last. Born on 7th May 1929 to John and Dinah Farrelly, Brendan was the youngest in a family of eight, with John, Peter, Richie, Andy, Kevin, Kitty and Mary, his older siblings.
Last November, Brendan celebrated 61 years of marriage to his soulmate and life-time companion, Eileen.
A very popular and successful businessman, Brendan Farrelly continued the old family business of supplying bricks and mortar. His method of transport was per tractor and trailer, with the big cheery wave to all and sundry. And then each block meticulously unloaded by hand.
There were many back kitchens and extensions built in and around Navan that had the necessary ingredients supplied by ‘B Farrelly’. His refuse company Wanta Bin Skip Hire was also part of the local landscape for decades.
Deceased had a huge interest in sport, and was a familiar face at race meetings throughout the country. His year would not be complete without the annual pilgrimage to Listowel in September. The occasional game of cards with friends was another popular event.
He was also a passionate supporter of Walterstown GAA?and took great pleasure watching the great ‘Blacks’ team of the late 1970s, early 80s.
He could remember games and old players with remarkable clarity, and up until recent times, Brendan rarely missed a Meath championship match.
A real outdoors man, he was happiest around the old family home at Lismullen, about a mile from Garlow Cross, amongst friends in the shadow of Tara and the Hill of Skryne.
Brendan loved to reminisce about bygone times and the days of his youth, and felt that we were forgetting our past.
In 2000, at his own expense, he erected a plaque at the dip in the road close to the Tara na Ri pub at Garlow Cross. The inscription reads ‘On the banks of the Gabhra River, in the corner of this field, stood Dillon’s Bridge National School, from 1860 to 1957’ - recognition for his old school and for the people who passed through its classrooms.
Navan came to a standstill as a lone piper led the funeral cortege through the town, starting on the old Dublin Road, to St Mary’s Church. Following the Funeral Mass, burial took place in St Mary’s Cemetery.
Brendan Farrelly is survived by his wife Eileen; son, John; daughters, Margaret, Dinagh, Helen, Brenda, Mary and Sandra; sons-in-law, grandchildren, great grandchildren; his sister Mary, St Mary’s Park, Navan; extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends. He was predeceased by son-in-law, George Lynagh, in 2007.
