Injury concerns as Meath see off Wee County challenge
Meath held off a late late surge from Louth to earn 2-10 to 1-12 victory in the NFL Div 2 at Drogheda today.
However, there could be further injury concerns for Mick O’Dowd as both Graham Reilly and Bryan McMahon were forced to leave the field with knocks.
It was McMahon who helped to get Meath off to a dream start when he found the net in the opening minutes but helped by the wind Louth bounced back to lead 0-8 to 1-4 at the interval.
Meath made a bright start to the second-half with Reilly pointing to level the scores before Andrew Tormey slotted over two points in quick succession to put his side in front.
However, the Royals were unable to draw away from their opponents and for much of the second-half it was Louth who made the running.
The Wee County gave themselves a big chance of victory when Shane Lennon netted from a penalty on 52 minutes after Cian Doyle was fouled in the square by Seamus Kenny.
As the game slipped into the closing stages Meath netted their second goal when Kevin Reilly delivered a superb pass to Dalton McDonagh who finished well for a score that was to prove so crucial at the end.
Both sides had opportunities in the final minutes with Stephen Bray spurning a great chance for a point to seal it for the visitors.
The victory today leaves Meath with nine points from a possible 14 but O’Dowd will be concerned about another few players added to an already long injury list.
