Job losses proposed for Tara Mines

Up to 60 jobs could be lost at Tara Mines in Navan under rationalisation proposals put forward by management at the facility.
Navan’s biggest private sector employer, Boliden Tara Mines, is to meet with workers this week and is expected to announce restructuring proposals which would involve up to 60 redundancies.
The company confirmed in a statement this morning that they are in discussions with the unions on proposals to lower the cost base in Tara. 
“The purpose of the proposals is to lower the cost base at Tara in order to remain competitive, extend the life of mine and sustain the operation and employment  for as long as possible,” according to the statement.
John Regan of SIPTU said this week that they would be resisting any proposals for redundancies.
He said it was very early days in the negotiations, but a proposal for 60 redundancies had been made.
Willie Quigley of the UNITE trade union said the company had proposals for rationalisation, but nothing concrete had been put to them
“It is early days yet and discussions are just starting,” he said.
