Explosive device handed in to Trim Garda Station

Trim Garda Station was evacuated last night when a member of the public handed in a 100-year-old explosive device.
A local resident found the cylindrical canister, which is believed to be anti-tank ammunition from the World War I era, when cleaning her garage.
The device was handed in to Trim Garda Station at around 10pm, and the immediate area was evacuated. The alert ended shortly after midnight.
The device was badly rusted and corroded, and a spokesperson for the Defence Forces noted that it had never been deployed.
Its explosive contents and detonator therefore remained in tact, and the army’s bomb disposal experts are due to destroy the device this morning.
The Defence Forces has urged anyone who finds what they believe to be explosive devices or material to alert the Gardaí in the first instance and avoid transportation.
