New trails for trims porchfields
Plans for three new historical nature trails at the Porchfields in Trim were announced at a recent meeting of Trim Municipal District Council.
The walkways, which will offer walks ranging from 1.5km to 4.4km, aim to enhance the town’s overall tourism offering.
A series of colour co-ordinated signposts will be erected at various stages along the three routes at cost of €11,000, and will display information in both English and Irish.
Some 75 per cent of cost is being covered by funding provided by the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government as part of the Public Enhancement Scheme. The remaining 25 per cent was previously committed by the former Trim Town Council.
Welcoming the project, Cllr Noel French said the trails represent “yet another facility for visitors to the town”.
Cllr Enda Flynn added that, while a good route existed for a looped walk in Enfield, it currently features two dangerous gaps in the footpath at each end of the village. “It is used by hundreds of people every week but there are two dangerous parts to it,” he said. “I will be bringing that up until the issue is addressed.”
Cllr Trevor Golden suggested that the next phase of the trails’ development should incorporate a finished surface to open the amenity to a wider audience.
