Hundreds travelled from meath to saturdays water charges protest
Several hundred Meath people turned out for last Saturday’s Right 2Water demonstration in Dublin.
They travelled in cars, busses and hired coaches to the demonstration, which is estimated to have been attended by more than 50,000 protestors.
Meanwhile, a Meath-wide Right 2 Water demonstration is planned for Navan on the 1st of November at 1pm and a preparation meeting will be held in the Newgrange Hotel on Tuesday the 21st October at 8pm.
Speaking at the rally in Dublin this weekend, Deputy Peadar Tóibín said water tax is the touch stone issue for struggling families right across the state.
Pointing out that 5,000 people in Meath are in mortgage distress, he said these people are already in danger of losing the roof over their heads.
“People are at a tipping point and this tax will push many of them over the edge into poverty.”
He called on people from across the political and community spectrum to join the demonstration on 1st November and mobilise their families and friends.
Seamus McDonagh of the Workers Party who also attended the demonstration on Saturday said they were all proud to be part of this memorable occasion and there had been a fantastic atmosphere of comradeship.
“This demonstration was an inspiration to us all. It has given us more encouragement and determination to carry on with the campaign of non-payment and civil disobedience. This charge is the straw that will break the camel’s back, he said.”
