Death of seamus heery of meaths 49ers
The death has taken place of Seamus Heery, a member of Meath's 1949 All-Ireland winning team who later captained the county side.
The Rathkenny clubman who later made his home at Collon, made his senior county debut as a 22 year-old in the Leinster campaign against Wexford in 1949, playing in the defence, beginning a successful period with Meath.
He took part in the famous three-in-a row games against Louth, and was on the team that beat Westmeath in the Leinster final.
Having seen off Mayo in the All Ireland semi-final, Meath ended Cavan's three-in-a-row All Ireland dream in 1949, with Heery playing at right half back, opposed by JJ Cassidy and later in the game, Victor Sherlock. He had an outstanding match, contributing much to the victory.
He was on a North Meath combination side that saw off Skryne in the senior county championship final of 1950, and became captain of the county team in 1951, when the county won the National League on a trip to New York, but lost the All Ireland a month earlier to Sean Flanagan's Mayo. His career was curtailed by back injury.
