Trainer Gillian Callaghan fined €1,000 today

You cant win even when you lose or win

Meath trainer Gillian Callaghan and Meath jockey Barry Geraghty had similar but different experiences on the track today at Naas and Wincanton respectively - one as a loser and one as a winner - and the stewards were interested in both.

NAAS

At Naas the Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Mount Corkish Girl (second run in a hurdle race after three bumpers) ridden by Andrew Lynch, and trained by Gillian Callaghan.

Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer - the Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that Mount Corkish Girl was coughing post race.

Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that both trainer and rider were in breach of Rule 212, - Mount Corkish Girl did not run on its merits and having considered their records, Mrs. Callaghan was fined €1,000, A.E.Lynch was suspended for seven race days and the horse was suspended for 60 days.

WINCANTON

Barry Geraghty won on The Young Master at Wincanton - but ......

There was a twist to the result of the Badger Ales Trophy £60,000 Listed Handicap Chase at Wincanton when it emerged the winning horse was not eligible to take part.

The Young Master won by an seven lengths, but had made only two previous starts over fences when the conditions of the race required him to have had three.

The stewards held an inquiry after the last race and the issue will now be referred to the British Horseracing Authority for further investigation.

Though the result stood for betting purposes, The Young Master could be stripped of the valuable prize in due course. Court By Surprise was second past the post.

Simon Cowley, a stipendiary steward on duty at the course, said: 'We were made aware of the potential ineligibility of The Young Master and have interviewed trainer Neil Mulholland. We have no authority to disqualify after the 'weighed in' and we have referred it to the BHA.'

A BHA statement read: 'We have been made aware of the potential issue surrounding the eligibility of The Young Master to compete in the Badger Ales Trophy.BHA will now take steps to look into the issue.'
