No need to be alone in kells this christmas
Kells People’s Resource Centre is co-ordinating a 'Meitheal na Nollaig' in the Resource Centre on Christmas Day with people who would otherwise be spending Christmas alone or in difficult circumstances.
A ‘Meitheal’ was traditionally a community gathering when neighbours came together to help and support each other whether it was saving the hay, taking in the turf, thatching a roof, or raising a barn. In this instance, it is a community coming together to celebrate Christmas by sharing a Christmas dinner and afternoon’s entertainment.
The concept is people coming together to help themselves and others to enjoy Christmas Day.
Each person attending will contribute to the organisation, tasks and resources needed to make the day an enjoyable and special occasion. Some people will be cooking the meal, others serving, washing up, giving lifts or entertaining –much like a family event.
Co ordinator Angela Murphy says they will also need the support of the community to make the Meitheal work.
'Can you offer practical assistance, resources or contacts? Can you help us reach the people in our community who would participate and benefit from the Meitheal na Nollaig?
'We will be putting together a wish list of what is needed and would be grateful if you can help us access the items/resources. Some things we might need donated and other we might need to borrow.'
