Meath athletes set for return to athlone it
It's back to Athlone IT this Sunday for Meath athletes with the AAI Open Indoor Games due to take place at the Westmeath venue.
Among those expected to take part is Kevin McGrath who achieved a superb victory last Sunday at Athlone when he won the National Indoor junior men's 1500m.
The young Bohermeen runner only turned 16 earlier this month but he did not let his youth prevent him from excelling in an event for 16 to 20 year-olds.
McGrath comfortably qualified for the final and he maintained his good form finishing just ahead of Star of the Sea's Andrew Coscoran who had to be happy with the silver medal.
McGrath's winning time in the final was four minutes 03.27 seconds with Coscoran behind him in four minutes 03.61.
Other Meath athletes also enjoyed notable triumphs including Cushinstown AC's Shannon Sheehy who won gold in the junior women's high jump with a leap of 1.65m and silver in the long jump with a jump of 5.33m.
Fellow Cushinstown athlete Keith Marks also performed well, winning the junior men's high jump.
Trim AC's Harry Purcell marked a return to competitive action at Athlone last Sunday after a lenghty lay-off when he produced an excellent display to claim the men's junior 800m title.
It will be interesting to see how Meath athletes peform at Athlone IT's superb facilities this time around.
