Omahonys chalk up big win over ballinlough in league opener
Davy Nelson's Navan O'Mahonys clicked into gear to defeat Ballinlough by 3-14 to 1-4 and get their A FL Div 1 campaign off to an winning start.
The game was played before a handful of freezing spectators at Brews Hill tonight and they witnessed a one-sided affair with the winners of the 2014 Keegan Cup proving for too strong for the team that claimed the IFC.
Early goals from Ross Geraghty and Stephen MacGabhann sent O'Mahonys on their way against a Ballinlough side missing up to nine players.
By half-time O'Mahonys were 2-10 to 0-2 in front with Kevin Devine getting Ballinlough's first point from a free after 22 minutes.
Playing some power-packed, fast-paced football O'Mahonys continued to steadily add to their account.
Devine put a better reflection on the scoreboard from his team's point of view with a goal from a free but it was never going to be much more than a consolation.
In the closing minutes Alan Forde waltzed through for a third goal for O'Mahonys who had big performances from players such as Cormac McGuinness, Forde, who top-scored with 1-4, and Gary O'Brien.
Ballinlough's misery was completed in the closing stages when one of their best players on the night Mark McCullen was shown a second yellow.
By that stage it was only a matter of how much O'Mahonys' margin of victory would be.
