850 lots in smarmore castle contents auction
The contents of Smarmore Castle near Ardee go under the hammer with Victor Mee Auctions on Sunday 22nd February at 12.30pm.
This castle is steeped in Irish history, and was the family seat of the Taafe family from 1330 onwards, who fought with King James at the Battle of the Boyne. The Taafes continued to live at Smarmore Castle till the 20th century. When the castle was sold in the mid eighties, it was transformed into a hotel and leisure centre.
Victor Mee Auctions have been consigned to sell the contents which include the private collection of fine art and furniture as well as the hotel and leisure centre contents. .
Victor Mee, auctioneer, stated: “There are 850 lots with something of interest for everyone, this is a historical house with a fine collection of antiques, all for sale this weekend.”
Lots of note include a William IV Mahogany three-pod dining table, estimated at €3,500 – 4,500, set of six Georgian mahogany dining room chairs, €3,000 – 4,000, Samuel Spode Study of Race Horse Small Hopes, oil on canvas flourished from 1825-58, €3,000 – 4,000, Irish Elk head, €1,000 – 1,500, four piece silver tea set by Rebecca Emes and Edward Barnard I, €3,500 – 4,500, mahogany four poster bed, €1000 – €1,500.
