Council provides 300000 for first phase of new cycle greenway
The first phase of the Navan to Kingscourt Greenway is ready to start if funding is secured from the Department of Transport, following Meath County Council’s provision last week of €300,000 for the first phase of the project.
The council is now hopeful of securing a further €650,000 from the Department of Transport to complete an 8km section of the greenway cycle and walking route from Navan to Wilkinstown.
The Navan to Wilkinstown section is part of an overall plan to link Navan to Kingscourt along the old freight railway line, at an estimated cost of €2.5 million.
The project has gone through the planning process and is ready to start when funding is available.
Cllr Eugene Cassidy, who has been working on the project for three years, said that following two meetings with the Department of Transport, he believed they would receive funding for the first phase.
He said the section from Navan to Wilkinstown would be the first 8km of a 30km greenway, which is expected to attract 152,000 users annually and generate €6 million for the local economy.
