Aldi submits application for trim store
The opening of a new Aldi supermarket in Trim has moved a step closer to reality with the lodging of a planning application for the development by the German retailer on Friday.
The planning application follows the signing of contracts between Aldi and Meath County Council in February on the purchase of the old swimming pool site at Watergate Street.
Last September, the council formally approved the sale of its 1.9 acre site to Aldi for the sum of €585,000, subject to planning permission.
Aldi Stores (Ireland) Ltd is now seeking permission for the construction of a single storey discount foodstore, including off-licence use, with a gross floor area of 1,757 sq metres and a net retail area 1,254 sq metres, as well as 106 car parking spaces.
The development includes the erection of two free-standing double-sided internally illuminated signs, one internally illuminated gable sign and entrance glass signage.
Vehicular access to the site is to be provided from Jonathan Swift Street, while pedestrian access is proposed from Watergate Street and Jonathan Swift Street.
The planning application was lodged on 12th June and, once validated, a decision is due on 6th August.
In the past, the site had been earmarked for new civic offices for the local authority but was subject to protracted legal proceedings following the discovery of fuel contamination in the ground more than 10 years ago. The conclusion of these legal proceedings allowed the council to proceed with selling the site.
