Ladies set for some important games
After a two-week break, the Coca-Cola-sponsored Meath Ladies GAA football championship returns on Monday evening with three key senior games down for decision writes Aisling Clery.
SENIOR
First up, current table-toppers St Ultan's take on Boardsmill in Bective and a win will secure a place in the semi-finals.
However, this is a determined Boardsmill team that will be boosted by the return of Emma Troy and this may make for an exciting and close contest.
Boardsmill have been beaten just once in this championship, Simonstown claiming all three points on that occasion. Victory for Boardsmill will be a huge boost heading into their final round game against Seneschalstown.
The second game of the evening will see Na Fianna take on Simonstown in Boardsmill.
Na Fianna have yet to get a win in this year’s championship and that is perhaps unfair on the Enfield/Baconstown side as they have been competitive throughout and have pushed teams, most recently Oldcastle in Round Five.
They face a Simonstown team who must win if they are to make the knock-out stages.
That prize alone may be enough for the Navan side to edge out Na Fianna – but this one could go down to the wire.
Navan O’Mahonys travel to Cortown to take on Oldcastle in the final game in the round.
O’Mahonys started the championship with a convincing win over Na Fianna, however they have struggled since and with players out injured, they face an Oldcastle team who must also win to ensure a place in the semi-finals with St Ultans waiting for them in the final round.
Fixtures – Round Six – Mon 17th August
St. Ultans v Boardsmill in Bective at 7.00
Na Fianna v Simonstown in Boardsmill at 7.30
Navan O’Mahonys v Oldcastle in Cortown at 8.00
INTERMEDIATE
On Monday evening, St Michael's will make the trip to Summerhill where a win will surely confirm their place in the last four.
St Michael's have four wins to their credit, their only loss coming against table-toppers Dee Rangers. Summerhill have three wins to their credit and have made it a habit to finish strongly, but they will have to be at their very best to overcome a tough Carlanstown/Kilbeg outfit.
In the final game of the round, Ratoath host Dee Rangers. Ratoath will need to utilise their home advantage and be at their very best if they are to overcome a Dee Rangers side who have yet to drop points in this year’s campaign.
On Thursday evening last, Donaghmore/Ashbourne overcame a tough Royal Gaels outfit by 2-10 to 3-8 in Dunshaughlin to claim their second victory. Blackhall Gaels and Moynalvey’s game is to be refixed.
Fixtures – Round Six – Mon 17th August
Summerhill v St. Michaels – Mon 17th in Summerhill at 7.30
Ratoath v Dee Rangers – Mon 17th in Ratoath at 7.45
JUNIOR A
This year’s Junior A Championship is one of the closest yet with just six points separating the top five sides.
Dunsany can go top of the table if they get a win at home against St. Pats/Duleek-Bellewstown.
The east Meath side however need a win if they are to stay in contention for a place in the semi-finals with neighbours St Colmcille's waiting for them in the final round.
Dunboyne will host Moylagh in the second of the games on Monday evening.
Both sides need to win if they are to have any chance of making the final four and they may also have to hope other results go their way.
Dunboyne have made it tough work in this year’s championship, but all may yet come good for the Div 1 League Champions with Skryne to play in the final round.
Clann na nGael have revived their championship hopes with a brace of wins over St. Pats/Duleek-Bellewstown and Moylagh in the last two rounds.
They face a young Skryne side in Rathcairn on Monday, their last of the championship as they have a bye in the last round and will await to see if they have done enough to make the semis.
Fixtures – Round Six – Mon 17th August
Dunsany v St. Pats/Duleek-Bellewstown – Mon 17th in Dunsany at 7.45
Dunboyne v Moylagh – Mon 17th in Dunboyne at 8.00
Clann na nGael v Skryne – Mon 17th in Rathcairn at 8.00
