Navan boxing mourns george gibney

Navan and the boxing fraternity are mourning the death of well-known coach, George Gibney, who has died after a year-long illness.

‘Gogie’ was involved with the present Navan Boxing Club since shortly after its formation in 1999, and was a coach, going on to become a judge and referee.

He had boxed himself as a youth with the original boxing club in the town.

Declan Sheridan of Navan Boxing Club has paid tribute to him, saying he will be a great loss to the club as he was an excellent coach, and greatly talented, and extended his sympathies to George’s family.

Predeceased by his sister, Josie, George is survived by his mother, Mary B; father, Paddy, brothers, Pa, Denis, Dermot, John, Thomas and Mark; sister, Lizzy, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and a large circle of friends, including friends from Navan boxing community.

He is reposing at his residence on Thursday from 6pm-8pm and Friday from 3pm-8pm. Removal is on Saturday morning to St Mary’s Church, Navan arriving for Funeral Mass at 10am. Burial afterwards in St Finian’s Cemetery, Navan.
