Almost 10 million cigarettes seized in Slane
Almost 10 million cigarettes with a retail value of over €5.25m have been seized in Slane.
The haul of cigarettes was uncovered on Monday evening as a result of an intelligence-led operation by revenue officers, supported by An Garda Síochana.
The container, which had travelled from Vietnam via Singapore and Rotterdam, arrived into Dublin Port last Thursday 15th October. The ‘American Legend’ brand cigarettes were described on the manifest as ‘timber furniture’.
Investigations into this importation are continuing.
This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal cigarettes.
The cigarettes represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €4.2m. This is assuming that they would have displaced the equivalent full tax paid quantity of cigarettes.
