Title for Oldcastle in thrilling final
Amazingly, the second MFC final (Div 2) at Pairc Táilteann today ended with a similar scoreline to the first as Oldcastle staged a remarkable recovery to get the better of jenkinstown Gaels by 3-11 to 3-10 and take the Liam Tolan Cup for the first time.
The championship success was all the sweeter for the Oldcastle players as they had already won a minor league title.
The victory will provide a significant boost for the hard-working club officials who have endured a couple of disappointing years at adult level.
Coached by Lorcan Fox, Paddy Gilsenan and John Caffery, Oldcastle were well out of contention at the interval as they trailed by six points (2-4 to 3-7).
That gap increased to seven early in the second-half when Sean Healy converted a free for Jenkinstown Gaels (Moynalvey / Blackhall Gaels).
However, Oldcastle got going and hit six unanswered points to trail by the minimum (2-10 to 3-8) with 10 minutes remaining.
When Ronan Taggart flicked CJ Healy's centre to the net in the 58th minute it tied the scores at 3-10 each.
Then in added time, Jason Scully converted a 40-metre free to win the title.
