Navan claim bragging rights in Drogheda

Navan continued their climb up the AIL Div 2C table with a hard earned 16-13 win over north-east rivals Boyne at Shamrock Lodge Drogheda tonight.

As is usually the case with local derbies there was no shortage of aggression and action as both sides had two players sin-binned for incessant fouling rather than anything malicious, but it was Navan who reaped the benefit when they had the advantages.

Alan Kingsley was first to go in the bin after just five minutes and while he was off Brian Howell benefited with a try for the hosts.

Kingsley returned to kick a penalty for Navan, but in the 21st minute Howell skated in for his second try to make it 10-3. That lead last just six minutes and with James Mose in the sin-bin for Boyne, Conor Ryan finished a fine move and when Kingsley added the extras the sides were level.

Kingsley kicked another three points six minutes before the break to ensure the visitors led 13-10 at the interval.

Within five minutes of the restart Boyne were level when Karl Keogh kicked a penalty, but the second period was all Navan. However they couldn’t find a way through the well-organised Boyne defence and it needed another Kingsley penalty with 18 minutes remaining to ensure Navan recorded their third win in a row.
