Encouraging display by Meath hurlers

Carlow did enough to win this first round Walsh Cup encounter at Navan’s Páirc Tailteann today by 0-19 to 1-13 against a determined Meath side.

Meath manager Martin Ennis will be pleased with the performance of a team that had an outside flavour to their starting 15 with Kilmacud Crokes duo Tom Clarke and Naomhan O’Riordan and Tipperary man Ronan Sherlock (Silvermines) all featuring.

Carlow were poor in the finishing department and tallied nine first-half wides which gave Meath an opportunity to settle. Meath trailed by 0-7 to 0-11 at the interval.

Meath resumed smartly in the second-half and managed a goal from top scorer Jack Regan as they twice made it a one-point game, but Carlow’s ability to find a response was crucial on each occasion and they were worthy winners.

Meath will host Wexford next Sunday in a double header with the footballers who will play Laois at 12.15 and 2pm respectively.
