The Voice of Ireland - week six results
It’s the penultimate Blind audition and after tonight’s show our coaches’ teams are nearly full. Next week will see Rachel and Kian with just two places to fill, Bressie with three and Una with just one. Kian is devastated when an ex Voice of Ireland contestant doesn’t pick him.
Darragh Lee is 21 from Youghal in Cork, this musical youth worker plays an impressive 4 instruments guitar, bass, drums and ukulele. His diabetes diagnoses changed his life completely - as a 14 year old, having to think about what to eat and when. He will be singing Ed Sheeran’s Photograph, this is a song he really relates to as his Uncle passed away just 3 weeks previous to his audition. Rachel and Kian hit their buttons and battle for him to join their team.
Rachel: there is something distinctive about your voice, there were moments when it was a bit nasally but I think that's just a technique thing, I feel like I can do anything with you.
Kian: when you sing an Ed Sheeran song it can be a negative thing as instantly you are going to be compared to him. When you went into the chorus I heard your tone I thought now we are rocking out. I can't let Rachel have you I need you to come to my team.
Darragh goes with heart and joins Team Kian.
Westmeath lass Dolores Kelly’s life reached a turning point when she cancelled her own wedding, she has since made a fresh start which includes singing. Singing runs in the family as the singing priest Fr. Ray Kelly who became a viral hit with over 1 million views singing Hallelujah. Dolores is hoping to follow suit with The Killers All These Things, unfortunately it’s not to be as none of our coaches choose her.
Bressie: the whole song sounded staggered it didn't flow, aspects were really strong.
Una: it fell at the beginning although it was special half way though.
Laura O’Connor, 20 from Finglas is no stranger to The Voice of Ireland having got all the way to the live shows in series 3. She has brought along her friend Gavin who was also in the live shows of series three. Gavin is a little anti-Kian and is adamant that she should NOT pick Kian if she gets through. Kian recognises her voice when she starts singing and she gets a 4 coach turn, whilst it’s a hard decision Gavin’s words are ringing in her ears and she chooses to join Team Rachel.
Una: I can imagine you going very far.
Bressie: when you were in the show you were a pop star and we all said it. Now you have gone up and you are a really strong singer. You could win it.
Rachel: you’re so expressive, a naturally gifted performer we could do amazing things together.
Kian: I was gutted when you went out, everybody was shocked and we have been in touch over the years I will be devastated if you don't pick me.
Brian Roche (29) is from Ardnacrusha in Clare and is more of an actor than a singer. As a teenager he starred in the BAFTA winning Custer’s Last Stand Up, won World Championship of Performing Arts in LA in 2013 and has been starring in musical theatre since he was ten. Singing Mr. Jones Counting Crows his impressive stage experience is not enough to secure him a place in the Battles.
Kian: sorry nobody turned it’s a tough game but I never got that moment.
Una: Your acting background should help you with your performance.
32 year old single mother Georgina Richmond from Belfast, auditioned in 2fm for the Voice with a throat infection, she suitably impressed the DJs and they put her through to the Blind auditions. She closed her beauty salon to concentrate on her singing career and singing a Beyonce song Running is no mean feat! All four coaches turn around and she is so overwhelmed she can't finish the song!
Bressie: absolutely perfect, very powerful there are so many songs you can do, if you can pull off Beyoncé you can do anything.
Rachel: You built the song I would not want to go up against you in the battles you will be a force to be reckoned with.
Kian: the magic was how tender you approached the verses which is really exciting you shouldn't be shocked all 4 chairs turned, you could go all the way.
Una: we all want you I love the huskiness in your voice.
Georgina decides to join Team Bressie.
Patrick Loewen grew up in Canada with his Irish parents. They sent him to boarding school in Galway and he later married his childhood sweetheart who sent him letters while he was there. One marriage and 2 kids later Patrick decided he wanted to move his family to Ireland and they moved to Galway. Bressie hits the button.
Kian: I felt you fell away too much although you have a good quality tone.
Bressie: I look for somebody who can develop and go on a journey, that's the kind of singer and why I like doing this show.
22 year old Cathy Moore from Swords is hoping today will be her day. Her Nana is her biggest supporter but unfortunately she can't come along to the audition today. It’s obvious she is nervous yet Kian reckons he can hear potential despite the nerves and he hits the button.
Rachel: you have some lovely qualities you need to develop your voice.
Una: you have huge potential it's there. Work on your voice.
Kian: I could tell you got very nervous but as song progressed there were great moments this is the hardest part of the competition I felt you deserved a chance.
Hannah Ferguson (20) from Derry will be singing Taylor Swift’s Wildest Dreams. Like Cathy she loves to sing but gets anxious when on stage, in fact she won an All Ireland singing competition and got to sing in from of 20k people in Croke Park, something she really struggled with.
Una hits her button at the last second.
Bressie: it was good, it's just didn't jump out at me.
Kian: I thought it was a nice vocal.
Una: you so deserve to go through you have a lovely voice. There is huge scope for you moving forward.
19 year old Michael Lawson was born in London and lives in Monaghan with his parents. He has entered singing competitions before but nothing of this magnitude, his silky smooth version of John Legend’s All of Me impresses Kian, Rachel and Bressie.
Bressie: you held it together, it was really strong performance.
Rachel: you were in the moment of the song.
Kian: difficult song choice, any little thing could have crashed it. You stayed silky smooth from start to finish.
Had decided on Bressie before the audition so he joins his team.
Alannah Best’s (18) grandfather persuaded her to audition for the Voice and is her biggest fan. She has chosen a very beautiful song Jealous by Labyrinth to sing, Unfortunately it’s not her time as none of the coaches pick her.
Bressie: you sang it well but it didn't mean a lot to you, it didn't feel fully connected.
Rachel it's all about the story and it needed to be sang more sensitively.
Una: you sang it too happy! It's such a sad song.
Sam Conlon is 23 from Skerries, is a student of Mechanical Engineering and works part time as a pizza delivery boy. He has never really sung for people before and has picked one of the hardest audiences ever - the back of the coaches’ chairs unfortunately he doesn’t get chosen.
Kian: there were definitely parts you were nailing it.
Una: there is a lovely voice in there but it needs practice.
Jessica Brett (18) from Clonmel was entered into the Voice by one of her best friends. She doesn’t expect any of the coaches to turn and is delighted when Rachel hits her button.
Una: you deserve to go through, you have a beautiful voice.
Bressie: there were shades of something there but I didn't want to fight with Rachel.
Kian: Rachel really wanted you and she is really good with girls such as yourself.
Rachel: you are the type of singer who can grow week after week.
