The Navan clean up in action

Huge turnout for Navan clean up

There was a huge turn out of volunteers for the recent launch of the Clean Up Navan Campaign.
“We were delighted with the turn out for the first event marking a new start for a new voluntary group for Navan town,” commented Bernadine Carry, Meath County Council at the launch by Sarah McGovern, ambassador for National Spring Clean at the Solstice Centre, Navan .
The spring clean of the town got under way with 50 volunteers from across a wide section of the community including CORE, Gateway, Meath County Council staff and councillors, staff from The Central, local residents associations, local churches and charities and representatives from the MOT Community Employment Scheme.
All donned hi-viz vests for their town, and collected litter on every highway and bye way throughout the town. Over 100 bags of rubbish containing sweet papers, household rubbish, plastic containers, sleeping bags, tyres, toys, cans and bottles galore were collected for disposal.
This initiative will see the development of a new Navan based community group who will become a key player in looking after the community effort which is needed to keep the town looking and achieving its best in terms of the physical environment, community spirit and cohesion.
“Meath County Council will fully support this group until it gets on its own two feet and will continue to assist in terms of guidance and grants going forward. Like all new organisations, good leadership is needed and the Clean Up events will hopefully assist in finding this key person or key group who will spearhead this new phase in the development of Navan Town,” said Ms Carry.
“There will be a Clean Up Event on the last Friday of every month over the summer. The next Clean Up will take place on the last Friday of April, 29th April at Solstice at 11am.
“All are invited to take part.  Refreshments, litter picking and personal protection equipment will be provided.  The large fast food retailers in the town and the large supermarkets who were unable to attend on this occasion will be encouraged to show their support.  We will also invite secondary schools and sporting organisations,” she said.
