Navan is hot - like it or not!
St Mary’s Musical Society in Navan this week presents ‘Some Like it Hot - Sugar the Musical’, the stage version of the iconic 1959 movie starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis.
The show is on in the Solstice Arts Centre nightly from Wednesday 13th April to Saturday 16th April at 8pm, and on Sunday 17th April at 7pm.
Billy Wilder’s movie is an all-time favourite classic comedy inspired by the German musical ‘Fanfares of Love’. The plot follows two poor musicians, Joe and Jerry, who witness the Valentine’s Day Massacres in Chicago and need to go on the run from mobster Spats Palazzo (who was very loosely based on Al Capone). They join Sweet Sue and her Society Syncopaters band who are heading to Miami. The snag is, it’s an all-female band and Joe and Jerry need to get in touch with their feminine side really fast!
Sugar Kane is played by Ciara O’Donoghue. Ciara played Linda in last year’s staging of ‘The Wedding Singer’ and is a member of Navan Theatre Group.
Joe (Josephine/Junior) is played by Ultan O’Cinneide, who joined the society in 2004 for ‘Aladdin’ playing the lead role. This is Ultan’s first time playing a lead role in a musical, having spent the last two years touring Europe teaching English through drama.
Jerry (Daphne) is played by Ronan Walsh. Ronan has been with the society since 2008 and has been a starring member in several productions, most recently as Drizella, the ugly sister in ‘Cinderella’. Ronan was part of the chorus cast in the AIMS 50th Anniversary concert, ‘ENCORE’ staged in the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in October 2015.
Sweet Sue is played by Caithriona Mongey. Caithriona’s last role with SMMS was as the hippest coolest Granny in ‘The Wedding Singer’.
Bienstock, band manager is played by Des Lynch. Des is also a core member of Navan Theatre Group having recently directed it’s production of ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’.
Spats Palazzo is played by Ian Rountree. Ian has learned how to tap dance for this role as the Chicago mobster which is a role very different to his recent character of Samuel the Pirate in Trim Musical Society’s production of ‘Pirates of Penzance’.
Sir Osgood Fielding Jnr is played by Enda Gill. Musician Enda joined SMMS in 2014, being cast as Commander Harbison in South Pacific.
The production team is made up of Richie Hayes as director; Aisling Toher as choreographer; and Paul Byrne as musical director.
Tickets can be purchased at the Solstice Box Office on (046) 909 2300, online at www.solsticeartscentre.ie, by clicking the Book Now button on www.smms.ie or on www.facebook.com/SMMSNavan. Wednesday 13th April is a concession night with tickets priced at €15. All other nights, tickets are €20.
