American choir takes part in Navan Choral Festival

The 37th Navan Choral Festival is ongoing at various venues around Navan this weekend. Each year the Choral Festival attracts the cream of choral talent from the four corners of Ireland, and this year the Alma College Choir from Michigan USA is also participating in the Adult Choir competitions. The Choral Festival concludes by hosting the prestigious National Choir of the Year competition, sponsored by Navan Rotary Club, in the Newgrange Hotel at 7.30pm on Sunday 8th May.

This year, 2016, will see the introduction of an exciting new opportunity for young opera singers, through The Young Opera Voice competition. This competition aims to promote and showcase talented young opera and concert singers. The introduction of this new competition will add further national and international significance to the Navan ChoralFestival and will undoubtedly prove an enormous success.

Throughout the five day Choral Festival there are competitions for solo singing, opera singing, primary school, post primary school/youth and adult choirs. A day is set aside in two different venues for the highly regarded piano competitions. The Choral Festival is an opportunity for all the competitors to showcase their talent and have a meaningful experience in music and vocal performance.Navan Choral Festival is aware of the importance of Irish culture and, through the Irish Language choir competitions, demonstrates that Irish is a living language in the community. The Choral Festival allows participatng choirs to make a positive choice to sing an Irish composition in the Irish language. For young people and adults, the Irish Language competitions gives them the opportunity to perform to a high standard and to embrace our Irish culture through song.

Navan Choral Festival also strives to bring the Choral Festival to the general public by inviting them, to attend the competitions, free of charge and to experience and enjoy the richness of the many performances. It is hoped that these performances will encourage many people to join their local community/parish choir and promote and encourage a culture where choral singing is valued and supported.
