Navan Avonmore rider involved in Ras pile-up
Approximately 10 cyclists participatiing in the An Post Eight-Day International Ras today were involved in a pile up outside Dunshaughlin earlier today.
Among the riders who were involved in the accident included a member of the Navan Avonmore Road Club Derek Finnegan however he quickly recovered and rejoined the race. Finnegan was riding as part of the 'Meath Avonmore' team which is effectively a Navan Avonmore selection.
It's is undertood that a number of the cyclists involved in the accident received scratches and bruises but at the time of writing there were no indications of any series injuries.
Ireland's most famous cycling race was running behind schedule but it passed through Navan a few minutes after 1pm.
Among those taking part are two teams from the Royal County - the Meath Avonmore selection and a team from Dunboyne. Also involved are teams from a variety of countries including New Zealand and the US.
The cyclists travelled at an impressive 47.7 km in the first hour of the race which started at Dublin Castle this morning before officially getting underway from Clonee at 12.30.
The cyclists complete the first stage at Multyfarnham this afternoon before heading south through parts of Cork, Kerry and Wateford before travelling up country again and finishing in Skerries next Sunday.
