Kells Road Races abandoned due to weather conditions
The Kells Road Races were called off today because of adverse weather conditions.
Heavy rain fell in Crossakiel all morning and the races, which were due to start at 11.30, were put back until early this afternoon when the decison was taken to call the races off.
The organisers were concerned about the water on the course and the spray that the high-powered bikes would inevitably stir up.
The Kells Road Races have become one of the most popular events on the Irish motorcycling circuit in recent years with up to 10,000 people expected to show up this weekend for some spectacular racing.
However, as rain fell throughout the morning it became increasing clear that racing would not take place as fear grew about the safety of the riders.
Aileen Fergeson of the Kells and District Motor Cycle Racing Club described the conditions as 'horrendous' soon after the announcement had been made to call off all racing.
She pointed out that officials from MotorCycling Ireland had taken the final decision to call the races off.
She thanked all involved in organising the event including sponsors and the Crossakiel community.
