Austrian title for Eddie Maguire
Navan resident Eddie Maguire created his own piece of history last week when he became the first Irish person to win an Austrian Open at any level when he was successful in the event for Blind and Visually impaired golfers.
Played at the Sussenbrunn Golf Club outside Vienna, it attracted a highly competitive field from all over Europe.
The local course is known as the 'Ballybunion of Vienna' because of its similarity to the Kerry links course.
The championship was played over three days and was finally decided over the last couple of holes when Maguire, a former Mayo and Meath footballer chipped in from off the green to clinch victory.
Karn Becker (Austria) was second and Gerhard Bergeant (Germany) was third while Ireland's Carol Brill won the B2 category.
Next up for the Irish Blind and Visually impaired golfers will be the British Open from July 17-22nd at Telford Golf Club in Shropshire.
Maguire is also currently holder of the Italian Open title and will be teeing off against golfers from all over the world and will be attempting to be the first Irish winner of this event.
He will captain an Irish team of six golfers, which also includes US open runner-up, Patrick Morgan junior (Ireland).
