In search of the Whitewood 'monster'
The claimed sighting of a mysterious monster lurking beneath the waters of Whitewood Lake caused quite a stir around Kilmainhamwood and Nobber 35 years ago.
There had been talk of occasional sightings over the years and in the summer of 1981, it was a hot topic after the late Denis Naulty, from Cruicetown told of his encounter with the mysterious creature while out fishing.
The Meath Chronicle carried a front page story all about the sighting and the local folklore surrounding the Whitewood 'monster'.

And when an RTE crew arrived with divers and cameras on a monster hunt, it caused nothing short of a frenzy.
The monster was a little camera 'shy' that day and failed to make an appearance and poor visibility also hampered the 'monster hunt'.
