Galway on a Plate for Gordon!
Gordon Elliott landed the Galway Plate at Ballybrit today when Lord Scoundrel and Donagh Meyler stormed to victory in the big race in which runners from the Willie Mullins stable finished second, third and fourth with two more from Elliott's team in fifth and sixth.
Plate favourite, the Noel Meade-trained Road To Riches, pulled up two out having made a bad mistake at the third.
Four of the eight winners today at Galway were trained in the Royal County with Tony Martin and Gavin Cromwell over the jumps and Ger Lyons on the flat also visiting the winners' enclosure.
In the Plate, Lord Scoundrel edged ahead in the closing stages for a length and a quarter win over the Mullins-trained Alelchi Inois while Elliott's other two were Clarcam and Shadow Catcher.
Elliott had his first winner at Galway in five years last night on the flat and he also had two winners at Perth yesterday and one there today from seven runners.
There was a bit of a sting subsequently for the winning Plate jockey who was handed a four-day ban over use of the whip in the big race.
Tony Martin and jockey Nina Carberry combined to win the Tote QR Maiden today with Sweet Company in the colours of Kells man John Breslin.
The Gavin Cromwell-trained Plain Talking and Brin Kane on board were cheered home by the bookies to foil a gamble on the 7/4 favourite runner-up Sea Light in a handicap hurdle. A return to the track on Saturday is a possibility for the winner.
It wasn't all good news for Meath jockeys though and Robbie Power sustained a facial injury in a fall in the mares' handicap hurdle in which Conor Maxwell and Davy Russell were also injured.
