Dunderry into IFC knock-out phase

Dunderry delivred an impressive IFC performance at Cortown this evening as they grabbed two second-half goals to win by 2-9 to 0-11 following an absorbing encounter against St Michael's.

That result, coupled with Donaghmore / Ashbourne's 4-7 to 0-11 victory against Curraha was enough to send St Michael's crashing out of the race for the IFC title.

Interestingly, in both games all the teams scored 11 times and the two teams that failed to score goals lost.

St Michael's lost David Lynch in the 10th minute to a red card and that handicap of playing with 14 men ultimately proved too much of a burden for the Carlanstown / Kilbeg outfit.

St Michael's were ahead by 0-7 to 0-6 at the interval, but 10 minutes into the second-half it was 0-9 each.

St Michael's then lost Sam Briody to a black card after Dunderry's Paddy Kennelly was fouled for a Dunderry penalty that Stephen Coogan converted.

Conor Farrell then grabbed a second goal for Dunderry after St Michael's goalkeeper Shane McCormack dropped a high ball although the glare off the lights may have had a bearing on that.

Dunderry also had second-half substitute Shane Maguire sent off after he collected a black card that had apparently been preceded by a yellow although that was not abundantly clear - when was the yellow issued?

KEVIN DOWD

Dunderry manager Kevin Dowd was full of praise for his players but was also critical of the fact that may of the same panel will have to play a SHC game on Sunday at Dunganny.

'It's not great, it's too much to ask players to play two championship game in 48 hours, these lads really want to have a fair chance of making they hurling knock-out stages, but they won't be in any condition to do themselves justice on Sunday, you'd have to wonder what sort of planning is going on,' he said.
