A FL Div 3 title for Dunderry
Dunderry gained some form of compensation for their IFC final defeat by St Colmcille's two weeks ago when they took the Cummins Cup for the A FL Div 3 home from Moynalty tonight after a hard-earned 1-14 to 1-11 victory over Syddan.
This was fine game of football with both sides deleivering plenty of entertainment for the large crowd and Syddan taking a 1-8 to 1-4 interval lead.
The lead was boosted by a 29th minute Kevin Garland goal for Syddan who also pointed in that opening half through Ian Curran (four), Daire Rowe (three) and Cormac Rowe.
Dunderry started the half well and had a fortunate goal on the board from Luke Martyn due mainly to some dreadful Syddan defending. They also pointed through Martyn, Conor Farrell and a brace from Stephen Coogan.
Dunderry had to up the tempo in the second-half and they managed that as they restored parity (1-8 each) by the 43rd minute as Coogan (two), Farrell and substitute Jordan Martin sent over.
However, Syddan replied with points from Curran and Daire Rowe as the pace quickened, but it was Dunderry who were better equipped for that in the closing stages abnd they got bback on terms again Coogan and Patrick Kennelly.
Dunderry finished stronger and forged ahead from Mark Kane's first or two points while Coogan also added two more to secure the victory with Daire Rowe closing out the scoring with a late Syddan point.
Both teams will play in Div 2 next year and Tommy Dowd (Tommy Dowd Oil sponsor) was on hand to present the cup to Simon Carty and stalwart clubman Jack Devine was also involved in the handing over formalities.
