Councillors signal end of the right-hand turn at Timmons Hill into Navan town centre
The days of traffic turning right up Timmons Hill in Navan from the Kells Road are numbered!
Councillors heard at a recent meeting of Navan Municipal District Council last week that the elimination of that turn was part of the overall town enhancement and bus hub scheme.
Cllr Joe Reilly had called on the council to eliminate the right turn at Timmons Hill which vehicles use to enter Market Square.
“This would allow for traffic to move more fluently along the Dublin Road and prevent gridlock,” he said.
He also called for consideration to be given to operating a traffic lights system at Blackwater Business Park as it is clearly becoming more dangerous for vehicles turning right towards Kells.
Cllr Reilly said the right turn at the bottom of Timmons Hill should not be there and at times could block traffic up as far back as the fire station.
“Logically it should not be there. It could be eliminated quickly and greatly improve traffic flow.”
Cllr Tommy Reilly agreed that there shouldn't be a right turn at Timmon Hill. He also called for the right turn from Circular Road onto the Fair Green to be eliminated.
Cllr Jim Holloway said the right turn at Timmons Hill should never have been here.
“It was a concession to vested interests at the time,” he said.
A report to the council said that prohibiting right turning vehicles at Timmons Hill, formed part of the traffic management plan currently being proposed for the town.
“This traffic management plan also includes the reversal of one way traffic on Ludlow Street and Bridge Street.
This will allow access to these streets from the Kells/ Dublin Road, via the Circular Road.”
The report stated that prohibiting the turn before the oher measures were in place would result in additional traffic on Circular Road and the Fair Green and Kennedy Road.
