Odd one out best in Leopardstown feature for Robbie Power
Returning from a back injury sustained last month, Meath jockey Robbie Power was the odd one out in the Stan James Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown yesterday as he stormed to victory on the Jessica Harrington-trained Sizing John.
Power was on board the only non-Gigginstown or JP McManus-owned runner of the seven that went to post.
Sizing John challenged going to the last in the three-mile contest and won well from the Gordon Elliott-trained duo of Empire of Dity and Don Poli.
The Chris Jones-owned Mega Fortune made use of front-running tactics for Davy Russell to win the Grade One Spring Juvenile Hurdle to keep trainer Gordon Elliott ticking over at the top of the trainers table ahead of Willie Mullins who was on the mark in the Deloitte Novice Hurdle with Bacardys.
Mega Fortune previously won on the flat at Sligo last year when trained by Andy Oliver, but fell on a first outing for Elliott in a maiden hurdle.
However, after yesterday's win Mega Fortune could be heading for the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham.
The JLT Chase at Cheltenham is on the radar for the Noel Meade-trained Disko after the Gigginstown grey ran the opposition into the ground in the Grade One Flogas Novice Chase.
Disko galloped on well to win by almost two lengths from the Jessica Harrington-trained Our Duke.
