Heartbreak for St Colmcille's
St Colmcille's dream of All-Ireland Club IFC glory ended in disappointment at Croke Park this evening they were edged out 3-8 to 2-12 in a thrilling finish by Mayo and Connacht champions Westport.
James Conlon looked like he had rescued a draw for the Meath champions with his late, late point attempt, but his effort fell short and with it came the final whistle.
The damage was done in a devastating spell midway through the opening period when a rampant Westport raced into a 0-8 to 0-1 lead.
Conlon gave St Colmcille's hope with a 28th minute goal, but seconds later Oisin McLoughlin responded in kind to ensure a 1-9 to 1-3 interval lead for Westport.
Ben Brennan cut that deficit with a point 15 seconds after the restart and when the captain bagged a second goal in the 43rd minute St Colmcille's were back in contention 2-5 to 1-10.
However Westport responded with two points and when McLoughlin scored his second goal with nine minutes left the lead was stretched to 2-12 to 2-6.
St Colmcille's refused to give up.
A penalty from Jack Reynolds closed the gap to two and when Eoin Woods left the minimum between them St Colmcille's dreamed of a remarkable comeback, but it wasn't to be and despite Conlon's late brave attempt they fell short and suffered heart break.
