Concussion workshop in Navan on Monday

Meath Local Sports Partnership has teamed up with the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) and Meath GAA tohost a workshop on concussion at the Newgrange Hotel, Navan on Monday next 13th March, 7.30pm.

Concussion is typically defined as a head injury, the common causes of concussion are car accidents, falls and sport injuries.

The aim of Monday's event is to help improve awareness and to educate coaches, parents, players and referees of all sports on the dangers of concussion and how to recognise it.

IRFU medical and injury prevention co-ordinator Shane Mooney will facilitate this workshop.

He has 24 years experience in providing front-line care and training and education in the area of injury prevention.

In recent times the GAA has also taken a more proactive role around concussion.

At the GAA’s recent National Concussion Seminar in Croke Park, Dr Kevin Moran, a consultant surgeon and Donegal team doctor, strongly recommended that the GAA ignore calls for a concussion substitute rule.

He explained that no sideline test can definitively rule out concussion, so any player with symptoms must stay off the field.

“If a player is mistakenly returned to action with concussion then Second Impact Syndrome, which results in death, can occur in the event of a second blow,” he warned.

Workshop topics will include 'Concussion Recognition Management' and 'Return-to-Play Protocols' followed by a question and answer session.
