Cllrs seeking CCTV to turn the screw on vandals
The recent spate of screw attacks in Trim where many motorists were left with busted tyres has prompted local councillor Noel French to call for CCTV in local estates.
At last week's meeting of Trim Municipal District, Cllr French said they needed to revisit CCTV again particularly as a deterrent for anti-social behaviour in some estates.
'There doesn't seem to be that much of a problem in the middle of the town but a lot of residents have had tyres burst in Mornington Heights. It put lives at risk and people have had to shell out for new tyres. They have enough to be doing without this extra expense.
'There have also been some incidents in Avondale where cars have been vandalised, scraping the sides. It is a very low thing to do. The council has to look at CCTV as a deterrent.'
He added that the former Trim Town Council had put funds aside for CCTV but at that time monitoring was an issue but that Gardai may be more open to this now and there may be grants available.
'I am asking the council to look at CCTV, perhaps mobile, for the estates,' he said.
Cllr Caroline Lynch said the tyre issue had been causing havoc in Mornington she had spoken to Gardai about it. She said the lack of resources is a big issue and they don't have the resources in the Trim area to go around in cars checking the estates. Cllr Lynch also called for improved lighting so that there are less dark corners for the culprits to hide in.
