Truck driver dies in M1 accident near Gormanston
One man was pronounced dead following an accident that closed one of the country's busiest motorways for a number of hours today.
The accident was just south of the toll plaza on the M1 near Gormanston just after 8.30am.
It's understood an articulated lorry lost control and struck a lay-by, used by gardai as an observational post, on its left hand side.
The vehicle then jack-knifed across the motorway preventing any other southbound traffic from passing it.
However the lorry did not over-turn and no other vehicles were involved.
The incident resulted in a large amount of traffic coming behind it quickly building up.
Gardai were alerted by a phone call at 8.34am and along with assistance from the fire service they managed the flow of traffic.
The traffic was allowed to turn around and use the southbound lane to head northwards towards Drogheda to exit the motorway.
