Sadness at passing of Dunderry stalwart Eugene Smyth

The Funeral takes place tomorrow of Eugene Smyth, Yellow Walls, Dunderry, a stalwart of the Dunderry community who was involved in many local clubs and organisations.

Eugene was Dunderry's 'Lord Mayor' for more than 30 years, and was a founding member of the Dunderry Fair Committee in 2004. He was also very involved in the local Darkness into Light committee along with his family, and was instrumental in bringing the first Darkness Into Light Walk in aid of Pieta House to Navan. 

His remains are reposing at his home from 2pm to 9pm today with removal tomorrow (Friday) morning to the Church of the Assumption, Dunderry, for Funeral Mass at 12noon followed by burial at Dunderry Cemetery.

Friend and fellow Dunderry Fair committee member Gus Martyn described Eugene as a 'great community man' and a 'friend to everyone'.

 'Whatever was on, he always and ever was there to help out. He was a very good neighbour who you could call on anytime.

'He became Lord Mayor of Dunderry 30 odd years ago for raising the most money for the GAA club at the time.'

Mr Martyn said that as well as being a farmer, Eugene worked in Roadstone for many years and he also wrapped all the local silage bales. 

Dunderry Fair paid tribute to Eugene on its facebook page saying the fair had lost a 'true friend and founder member'.

'Eugene was a dedicated member of the Fair and of the many clubs and organisations that he was involved in. 
'He was a very busy man throughout his life, but rarely missed a function and never let his friends in the surrounding communities down.'
