Major water mains burst in Navan
Irish Water crews are on site of a major pipe burst in Navan this morning which is affecting thousands of homes in the town. It is the second time a major burst has occurred in the same point on the pipe carrying water from the reservoir at Proudstown to the town. Just days before Christmas in 2015, there was a major leak in the same area at Simonstown which caused flooding in the immediate area and left the town without water.
The burst happened at around 3am this morning. The spare part necessary to fix the leak is in stock and crews are currently working on the repair which is expected to be completed at lunchtime with water expected to be restored to homes later this evening.
According  to a statement from Meath County Council,  the burst is affecting all of Navan town including Johnstown, Boyne Road, Slane Road, Proudstown Road, Windtown Road, Kells Road, Athboy Road and Kentstown Road. Surrounding areas also affected are Walterstown, Dean Hill, Bohermeen, Ardbraccan, Dunderry, Gibbstown, Garlow Cross and Cannistown
'Meath Co Council on behalf of Irish Water is working to restore water supply as soon as possible and supply should be restored by this evening,' a council spokesperson said.
A statement issued by Irish Water just before lunch said the repair materials are on site and the repair is progressing well with full supply expected to be restored later today.
'There is some water remaining in the network and many customers will have storage in their tanks so may not experience a full outage as yet but will be experiencing reduced pressure. Supply is maintained to other areas from the Kilcarn WTP specifically the Dublin site of Navan and surrounding areas.
'Tankers have been mobilised and have replenished water storage tanks in Our Lady's Hospital in Navan and are doing the same for Meath Disability Services. Tankers are on standby for residential use but have not yet been deployed as the outage is under a 24 hour period. Vulnerable customers who registered with Irish Water are being supplied water from IBCs.'
Traffic travelling on the Kingscourt-Navan Road is being diverted at Kilberry. In Navan, the Proudstown Road is closed at the roundabout at the 'Round O'. Diversion signs are in place.
