Carberry turns hand to showjumping
Former National Hunt jockey Paul Carberry is turning his hand to showjumping and makes his international debut at the RDS Dublin Horse Show this evening.
The Skryne resident retired from race riding a year ago this week due to an ongoing issue with a leg injury.
Winner of the Aintree Grand National in 1999 on his late father Tommy's Bobbyjo, he was also associated with Doran's Pride, Best Mate, Harchibald, Solwhit and Florida Pearl, and was Noel Meade's long time stable jockey.
Champion Irish jump jockey in 2001-02 and 2002-03, Carberry won a host of big-races on both sides of the Irish Sea and rode 14 winners at the Cheltenham Festival.Â
His final Grade One winner came aboard Gordon Elliott's Don Cossack in the 2015 Punchestown Gold Cup.Â
He'll be no stranger to jumping challenges, as his role as whipper-in with the Ward Union Hunt has seen him jump many high fences and walls! He won the jumping wall competition at last year's Culmullen Cross Country Chase.
This afternoon, Carberry will take part in a Masterclass with showjumping guru Yogi Bresiner about that transition. He will be on horseback at 2.50pm while Yogi puts him through his paces.
He competes in the International 7&8 year old (1st Round) this evening from 6.30pm.
