Locals gutted as Aldi gets green light in Laytown

News that an Bord Pleanala has granted permission for an Aldi store on a prominent site on the Laytown seafront despite strong local objections has been met by dismay and disappointment in east Meath.

Local councillor Sharon Tolan said locals were "gutted" by the decision, adding that "it was a sad day for East Meath".

Last December Meath County Council granted permission for the discount supermarket despite more than 160 objections being lodged against the plans and this decision was appealed to an Bord Pleanala. A decision on the appeal was delayed a number of times and this morning news has come through that Bord Pleanala has upheld the council's decision to grant, to the disappointment of locals.

Cllr Tolan said: "There doesn't seem to be any concern for the public and what they want. I have no problem with Aldi being in the area. It would be a good addition, but not in that location. It should be in the town centre.

"It is going to increase traffic on the the road which is not fit for the traffic that is already on it."
