Colin Keane heads to Naas as champion jockey
Trim man Colin Keane goes to Naas today for the final flat race meeting of the season as the 2017 champion jockey after he sealed the title at Dundalk on Friday night.
However, the celebrations are on hold until after today's action at the Kildare track where Colin will be in action in the opener for his father Gerry on a horse (Mean Fomhair) owned by a long-time friend of the Keane family, Frankie Dufy.
Preparations were in full swing earlier this morning when the Meath Chronicle visted the Keane stables close to Trim and Colin took some time to chat about the season that will officially conclude today - although racing will continue at Dundalk through the winter months.
Currently on 98 winners, Colin will be aiming to make it to the 100-winner mark for the season and would be delighted if he could make it 99 with a winner for his father, the man who gave him his first winner back in 2010, when he goes out for the first at Naas.
Thanks to Gerry Keane and also to Colin for allowing us access to the stable this morning.
Read the interviews and reports in this week's Meath Chronicle – with a racing flavour – out on Tuesday evening.
