Theatre group brings Russell classic 'Stags and Hens' to Navan stage
Navan Theatre Group's 2017 production is the hilarious fast paced adult comedy, 'Stags and Hens', which was originally written by Willie Russell in 1978 and later adapted for performance in 2008, premiering at The Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool to a rapturous reception.
Like other Russell plays 'Educating Rita', 'Shirley Valentine' and 'Blood Brothers' this play entertains and challenges the audience. It is uproariously funny, deeply poignant and sharply observant of the everyday life of ordinary people as they deal with life events – in this case the Stag and Hen parties of Dave and Linda.
Unknown to each other Dave and Linda have decided to have their respective Stag and Hen parties in the same tacky Liverpool club – or more accurately, in its toilets. What ensues is not for the faint-hearted neither is it for those without a sense of humour.
The tempo is fever pitch when Linda’s ex-boyfriend Peter a musician arrives and offers her an alternative to Dave.
This causes uproar between the two groups of friends and when the Hens have their say they all gang together to stop the not so virtuous Linda taking up the offer of an escape. She is then left with a difficult decision – will she stay or will she go.
The Hens and Stags from Navan Theatre Group have been in rehearsal since late September with Des Lynch as director.
They are really looking forward to bringing this brilliant depiction of what passes for courtship, and the squeals, jeers and flings considered as a necessary prelude of getting wed. This very funny night ends with a taunt to all of us "who’d be married today if we took notice of how we feel?"
The cast is: Linda – Deirdre Doyle, Maureen – Ciara Cassoni, Bernadette –Joanne Donoghue, Carol – Clare Atkinson, Frances – Gráinne Brady as the hens; Eddie – Pádraig McLaughlin, Robbie – Shane Fox, Billy – Eoin Kenny, Kav – Seán Flanagan, Peter – Ronan Walsh, Roadie - Daryl Marmion, Dave – Nigel Ryan, as the stags.
