Mairead Delaney looking forward to new role
Dunshaughlin woman Mairead Delaney was elected as the first female secretary of the Meath GAA Co Board on Monday night and is looking forward to her new role.
It was known in advance of the meeting that she would be unopposed for the role as the only nominee, Martin O’Halloran, had indicated two weeks ago that he would not be contesting any positions. O’Halloran is the new Leinster Council PRO.
In her brief address, the new secretary commented on the great honour for her club and also highlighted the fact that another Dunshaughlin woman, Mary O’Regan, is the secretary of the Meath Ladies GAA Co Board.
“I am absolutely delighted and honoured to be elected, I suppose I am breaking new ground as the first female runaí,” she said.
“I have worked with Peter (O’Halloran) for many years and we have worked well together in the past,” she added.
Joining the Dunshaughlin woman as assistant-secretary in a welcome return to the Co Board is former PRO Anne McDonnell from Summerhill.
She defeated Wolfe Tones delegate Emma Kearney (104-73) in what was the first all-female contest for any position on the Co Board.
