Tony Martin lands big Leopardstown race
Tony Martin's Anibale Fly landed the €200,000 Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown today with Donagh Meyler on board hitting the front into the home straight.
It was a real Meath finish to the big race on day two of the Festival with a trio of Gordon Elliott's taking second, third and fourth with Ucello Conti, Squouateur and Potters Point filling those places.
For Martin, who had a Group 1 winner on the flat in Italy at the end of October, this was yet another big pot and he also had sixth home (Phil's Magic).
“This is what you get up everyday for, to have days like this. It doesn't happen too often but when it does it's great," commented Martin.
Elliott had earlier got off the mark at Leopardstown when Tycoon Prince landed the beginners chase with Davy Russell on board.
WELSH NATIONAL
There was no joy for Elliott or Gavin Cromwell today at Chepstow where the Welsh National meeting was abandoned due to flooding and the race will now take place on Saturday 6th January.
Gordon Elliott had Folsom Blue in the National at Chepstow while Cromwell had Raz De Maree in that race and Famous Milly in the valuable £50,000 juvenile hurdle
STATEMENT FROM CHEPSTOW
Following 60mm of precipitation in the last 48 hours, including 40mm of rain and some snow overnight, the track at Chepstow Racecourse is waterlogged which has led to the restaging of the 2017 Coral Welsh Grand National meeting.
As part of the restaging of Wales’ premier horse race, Newcastle Racecourse’s fixture will move from Saturday 6th January to Sunday 7th January.
Coral Welsh Grand National entries will revert to all horses entered at the 'Weights Published' stage. All other races on the card will be re-opened and will close at noon on Monday 1 January.
ARC and ITV are currently discussing options for the Coral Welsh Grand National, and any supporting races, to be shown on ITV Racing on Saturday 6th January, alongside racing from Sandown and Wincanton.
