Athboy charity quiz series to hit €100,000 mark
What started out in late 2012 as a one-off event has led to one of the most successful local fundraising stories in Athboy. The first quiz raised €1,400 for charity, and that was meant to be the end of it.
But a few weeks later the local GAA club Clann na nGael asked if they could have a quiz to help them, then the Tidy Towns Committee made a similar call, and soon the momentum had gathered. There has been a quiz on the first Thursday of almost every month since, with a few special ones in between.
By Christmas 2017, Floods had held their 80th quiz with several regular teams attending all or nearly all quizzes. The legends that are Jim Martin and Liam Hopkins are among the super supporters along with many others.
Quizmaster Bernard O’Byrne summed up the spirit of the events, saying: “All of the money raised has been from locals helping out their schools, their sports clubs and their charities. A real buzz surrounds each quiz because it is the community helping itself”.
The total amount raised is set to hit the €100,000 mark on 1st February, and beneficiaries Athboy St Patrick’s Day Parade Committee are proud to be a part of this momentous occasion. Chairman Paudie Miggin said “We would encourage as many people to come along on the night; it would be great to see a representative team from every club who has ever benefited”.
Bernard, Paul Flood and the team behind the smoothly run events (Mary Flood, Noreen Lodge, Mary Monaghan, Peter Coffey and Pat Monaghan) will be looking forward to welcoming the local quizzers for this wonderful celebration.
Athboy St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee will host their quiz on Thursday, 1st February. A table of four is €40 with the quiz kicking off at 9pm sharp. There will be a raffle on the night and an atmosphere second to none as organisers will announce breaking the €100,000.
