New surround sound digital cinema at Solstice Arts Centre
The cinema at Solstice Arts Centre, Navan, now boasts a digital 4K Sony Projector, Dolby Surround Sound system and a 10 metre screen. The theatre was successful in securing a Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht grant to upgrade their cinema facilities and recently completed the works in conjunction with Meath County Council.
To celebrate the new digital capabilities at the centre, programme manager Erin Kenny has scheduled a host of new screenings. Films include award-winning recent releases, home grown Irish productions, an Italian opera in HD recording, the Audi Dublin International Film Festival on tour, a food waste documentary and several children's films.
Solstice continues its regular Wednesday night screenings with The Florida Project, Call Me By Your Name, The Death of Stalin, Loving Vincent and Michael Inside. Loving Vincent is a multi-award winning film about the life of Vincent van Gogh in which every single frame of the film, all 65,000 of them, were individually hand-painted in the artists’ instantly recognisable style. Michael Inside is an Irish film which was researched and workshopped with former prisoners from the Irish Prison Service’s Pathways Programme. Individual screenings are priced at €7.50 / €6 concession or €5 per film when booking four or more.
For the first time ever, Solstice will screen a HD recording of a full opera performance. Carmen by Italy’s national opera company Teatro Dell’Opera di Roma will test out the new equipment with some of the all-time greatest arias and incredible sets in a spectacular feast for the eyes & ears. The Audi Dublin International Film Festival goes on tour this year and visits Navan with a screening of The Divine Order. A ‘Silver Screen’ showing of the 1952 classic Monkey Business starring Marilyn Monroe & Cary Grant and food waste documentary Just Eat It round off the adult cinema programming this season.
Children can enjoy a season of classics which include Paddington, The Princess Bride and a free screening of the wonderfully weird Jim Henson creation Labyrinth. There are also numerous spring, aster and mid-term workshops lined up to keep the little ones busy during school breaks but be warned, these always sell out fast.
As always, the theatre and visual arts programme will feature the very best of home grown talent alongside national and international artists. With acts like Jason Byrne, The Three Tenors, Irish National Opera, Neil Delamere, Redmond O’Toole and Jack L alongside St. Mary’s Musical Society, Encore Stage School, LMETB and St. Joseph’s Mercy Secondary School, it’s going to be another busy season at Meath’s Centre for the Arts.
