Black card controversy as Longwood win

There was controversy at Pairc Tailteann today as Longwood inflicted a surprise IFC first round defeat on one of the teams fancied for silverware, Dunderry.

Longwood were worthy winners of an absorbing contest by 3-12 to 1-13 although the trailed by the minimum (1-7 to 1-8) at the interval.

The incident that the spectators were talking about at half-time was the decision by referee Richard Morris to allow Dunderry goalkeeper david Jennings remain on the pitch after he received a black card.

There was no debate about the validity of the black card, Jennings hauled down Longwood's Aaron Ennis and a penalty was awarded.

The black card was produced, but after he appeared to start the long walk to the sidelien Jennings returned to stand between the posts (see video clip) to face Mickey Burke.

Burke duly converted and that goal cancelled out an earlier Dunderry effort by Stephen Coogan while Jennings eventually departed and was replaced by Gareth Dooley.

Dunderry remained in front until early in the final quarter when Longwood got back on terms (1-12 to 2-9) - Aaron Ennis got the goal.
Dunderry struggled subsequently and were left shellshocked when Longwood's Gavin Griffith scrambled a late third goal.
