Drumree GAA pays tribute to Paul Gaughan
Drumree GAA club has paid tribute to Paul Gaughan, who died on Saturday morning following a long brave battle with illness over the past number of years.
"Rubber, as he was affectionately known, was a resident of Batterstown but played all of his adult hurling and football with Drumree. He was an extremely gifted hurler and footballer who was full of class and hard as nails ! He was an integral part of some of our most successful teams over the past 20 years lining out at wing forward when we won the Meath and Leinster Junior Football Championships in 1998. He scored Drumree’s first point to settle the teams nerves in the Leinster Football Final.
Rubber was one of the star player in 2003 when we won the Intermediate Hurling Championship where he lined out at corner forward and scored a memorable goal at a vital time in the match on a wet day in Navan against Clann na nGael.
When his playing days came to an end he became a dedicated follower of all Drumree teams and was always on hand to give his younger brother James and others ‘shrewd advice’ from across the fence !
On the pitch he was a talented and tough player, off the pitch he was a true gentleman and always up for the laugh. He will be missed greatly by all who knew him.
Paul will be sadly missed by his mother Philomena, father Seamus, brother James, sisters Nicola, Lynette and Jackie, fiancee Louise, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends."
